    • A UNESCO Reserve of Biosphere

      This biosphere reserve is locates in the Tuamotu Archipelago some 360 km north-east of Tahiti. His diversity makes the Commune of Fakarava Biosphere Reserve unique in its composition and characteristics.

      In 2002, French Polynesia issued a decree making its territorial waters a “sanctuary for whales and marine mammals”.

      In July 2020, the journal Nature published a study on reef shark populations around the world and its findings put Polynesia on the top of the podium. There are no less than twenty species of sharks there, including some emblematic such as the Mokarran (great hammerhead shark) or the Tiger shark.
